It’s Oscar season and my family and I have watched all movies in the 2023 Oscar-nominated best pictures category. In fact, we watch every movie nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award every year. And when time allows, we watch films in the other Oscar categories including Best Animated Feature, Best Actor, Best Actress.

Here is a list of the 2023 Oscar Best Picture movies nominated and ranked (not necessarily listed in the order of which film I think will win an Academy Award). Update: Note that I wrote this post pre-Oscar night. And let’s just say I missed something when it came to Everything Everywhere All at Once. My son and my niece loved it. Me not so much.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: The Banshees of Inisheran
I would watch this movie again as I loved The Banshees of Inisheran. While there are so many movies about friendships between women, this film provides a unique perspective about male friendships. Losing a best friend who forgets to tell you is extremely painful. The Banshees of Inisheran definitely earned the Oscar nomination for Best Picture and was my favorite.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: Tár
If you need fast-paced, literal movies that tell you what it’s about, then Tár is not for you. The beauty of this story is all between the lines. And the ending? You could take this film literally and it would still be a meaningful movie, but that is not why Tár was nominated for Best Picture.
Although not very likeable, I loved Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of the main character, Lydia Tár. She’s up for Best Actress and could likely win. In fact, she was my pic until I saw To Leslie. See below for my thoughts on 2023 Oscar Best Actress Nominee Andrea Riseborough.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: All Quiet on the Western Front
Full disclosure: When we first streamed this 2023 Oscar-nominated film for Best Picture, I fell asleep. I’m glad I decided to give All Quiet on the Western Front a second chance. This foreign film definitely deserves the Academy Award nomination. In fact, my husband chose it as his pick for 2023 Oscar Best Picture.
I’m not usually into remakes, but I’ve never seen the original. The 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front received the Best Picture award in the third Oscars ever. I found All Quiet on the Western Front very moving from the other side’s point of view. It hit home that war is stupid and affects everyone.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: Elvis
Elvis is a pretty good biopic of the King of Rock and Roll – and one that his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, endorsed. Although I appreciated seeing the vulnerable behind-the-scenes look at Elvis, I felt like the movie focused more on Colonel Tom Parker’s influence. So I think the name of the movie should have been Colonel Tom Parker.

As an 80s lady, I was a huge fan of Top Gun – one of my favorite movies from that decade. And while I loved Top Gun: Maverick, I was surprised it was nominated for the 2023 Oscar Best Picture Academy Award. But it was fun to watch how Maverick turned out decades later. Lots of action, relationship-building, and forgiveness going on in this nominate Oscar Best Picture film.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar is another sequel included in the list of 2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture category. And it is worthy. The cinematography, visual effects, and storytelling were brilliant – simply stunning. I’m not a big fan of 3-D movies, but Avatar is one you must see in the theater to appreciate all the work that went into the visual effects. You really feel like you are right there with them. And you forget that it’s all digitally created – they look real not animated or CGI.
While I saw and loved the original Avatar way back in 2009, I didn’t remember much of the details. But no worry. It’s not a prerequisite to watch the new Avatar movie. They do a great job of making this a standalone movie.

Why isn’t Avatar: The Way of Water considered an animated film? That is a touchy debate especially with Director James Cameron. 2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: Triangle of Sadness
I went in blind when I watched Triangle of Sadness. And initially was thinking I had selected the wrong movie. Surely, this was not the Oscar-nominated movie I was supposed to be watching. But I hung in there. And glad I did. While Triangle of Sadness appears low on my list of 2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture films, it is worthy of the nomination. And it kept me guessing on where this story was taking me.
Think Fargo. Definitely a dark comedy. Although it did also give me vibes from Lord of the Flies.
And I learned what Triangle of Sadness means.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: The Fabelmans
I know The Fabelmans is way down on my list of the Oscars Best Picture. I really did like it and it is worthy of an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. It’s a family saga loosely based on Director Stephen Spielberg’s childhood. He does a great job of exploring the complex and often complicated family dynamics, drama, and relationships – and following your dreams and heart.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All at Once
Unpopular opinion here. I am definitely in the minority when it comes to this 2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture film: Everything Everywhere All at Once (and it won!). While it was cool to see the kid from Indiana Jones all grown up, I honestly didn’t remember much about this movie. We saw Everything Everywhere All at Once before the 2023 Oscar nominations. I remembered it was a family saga that took place in their home and laundromat business. But I did not remember the storyline, that it was a multiverse, and even that Jamie Lee Curtis was in it.
Seriously? I love Jamie Lee Curtis. It was only when my son reminded me of the scene with the fingers that I kinda recalled her acting in this film. An Oscar-nominated film where she is nominated for Best Supporting Actress (she won!). Maybe I need to watch it again to appreciate it more. But I did not like it all that much the first time.

2023 Oscar-nominated Best Picture: Women Talking
Women Talking should be my kind of movie. Lots of introspective conversations and giving visibility to the challenges in a male-dominated world, abusive relationships, and what a mother will do to protect her family. While I applaud the ambition, this film just fell flat and short for me. The conversations seemed forced and didn’t quite ring true. The women were kept illiterate, yet they were very articulate and seemed worldly. And while I’m good with slow-burn movies and don’t need my hand held to tell a story, this one definitely had gaps, did not provide closure, and left me with a lot of questions.

I highly recommend The Whale and hope Brendan Fraser gets the Oscar for Best Actor (update…he did!). I don’t believe it’s streaming yet, but is in some theaters.
2023 Oscar Best Actress
Hoping for an upset here that Andrea Riseborough receives the 2023 Oscar for Best Actress (she didn’t). My husband and I both agree that To Leslie should have received a 2023 Oscar nomination for Best Picture. It didn’t earn much at the box office – I read somewhere less than $30,000. To Leslie is currently streaming and we rented it from Apple TV.

From the list of 2023 Oscar Nominate Best Picture Movies I have seen Top Gun Maverick at the cinemas twice. It was a big thing for me when the first came out! I’ve seen the first of All Quiet on the Western Front, and it’s on my to watch list, I would have already seen it. if it had as been released at the cinemas because I prefer to see those types of movies on the big screen.
Top Gun Maverick was a great movie. And also loved the new version of All Quiet on the Western Front. I still need to watch the original which won the Oscar for Best Picture.

I love Banshees of Inisherin. However I went with Everything Everywhere All at Once to win. And it did. It’s the kind of quirky, layered film the Academy seems to go for.
I would definitely watch The Banshees again. I was hoping for an upset but wasn’t surprised that Everything Everywhere All at Once took home the 2023 Oscar for Best Pic.
