I’m not going to lie. The book, Unexplained: Real-life supernatural stories for uncertain times,” by Richard MacLean Smith was not a page-turner for me. It took me a couple of months to finish reading. Not because this creepy book wasn’t good or was slow. It was too good.

In fact, my husband read Unexplained: Real-life supernatural stories for uncertain times before I did – in just a couple of days while we were on vacation back in January. And then he flew home while I stayed a few more days in Mexico on a solo travel blogging trip.
I started to read Unexplained after he left, but this is not the kind of bedtime story you need when traveling solo. I had to put it down because there was no way I would have been able to fall asleep (and I already suffer from insomnia).
So I thought I would read Unexplained when I was safely at home.
Nope. Wasn’t going to happen. I only found time to read at night, and, well, Unexplained spooked me out even at home.
And then I had to go and start watching the Netflix series, The Outsider, which is based on a Stephen King book. So a little too much creepy for me all at once (if you haven’t seen The Outsider, I highly recommend).
I digress.
I did finish reading Unexplained: Real-life supernatural stories for uncertain times during the daylight hours.
Now Unexplained: Real-life supernatural stories for uncertain times isn’t jump-out-at-you scary or a horror book. For me, it’s scarier when unexplained and creepy things happen in real life.

The author of this book, Richard MacLean Smith, researches, writes and produces a popular podcast by the same name, Unexplained (it’s been streamed more than 16 million times). The book was reminiscent of the television shows Unsolved Mysteries and Twilight Zone. And featured 10 different supernatural or unexplained happenings around the world – everything from UFO sightings, to bizarre coincidental and unsolved murders to demonic possession and more chilling tales.
But the author didn’t just tell good stories. He also touched on science and our belief systems and asked thought-provoking questions. I found the author approach the unexplained from a curious mindset rather than simply sensationalism.
Along with the 10 strange, unexplained stories in the book MacLean Smith discusses:
- What can a case of demonic possession teach us about free will?
- What can a cursed box show us about the act of storytelling?
- What can a supposed instance of reincarnation tell us about developing a concept of the self?
- And more.
If you love a good mystery, are a true-crime fan, not easily spooked, naturally curious, open-minded, or just like a good story, then I highly recommend Unexplained: Real-life supernatural stories for uncertain times. I gave it 4*.
